The Aurora Film Society brings “City of Hope” to the screen at The Venue (21 S. Broadway) on June 17th at 7pm.
The impending demolition of an old apartment block is the crux around which numerous characters’ lives and stories intersect. External and internal forces push and pull a diverse range of characters as they struggle with the balance between what they want and what they think to be right.
Typical of Sayles’ films, several tales are woven together to tell the stories behind the story. Crooks and crusaders, rich and poor, black and white — all duke it out for their piece of the pie. “City of Hope” takes an interesting and technically impressive approach to juggling all its disparate storylines and characters, shifting the focus from one to another within the same scene, never showing the seams and appearing effortless. More than a screenwriting and directorial showcase, however, “City of Hope” is ultimately a story that shows the intricate ecosystem of urban life and the struggle between corruption and integrity better than most.
